ATQ.1889,The Literary History of England 1790-1825 by Mrs. Oliphant Vol I,II,III.

Author(1828-1897), was a Scottish novelist and historic writer, daughter of Francis Wilson. She produced more than 120 separate works including novels, books of travel, histories and volumes of literary criticism.

The works were first published in 1882. This is the second , revised edition.

This was a difficult period in England to be a literary writer. No less a women literary writer. This becomes most apparent in the’Preface to the New Edition’ penned by the author. For example:

“It is, however, in respect to Wordsworth that there is most to say. Brought up in his worship and service, I find myself treated as a publican and an infidel by those who consider themselves his expositors in the present generation; and learn, with astonishment, that the instances of his power which I have chosen please them little more than the exceptions I have taken.”
