Elevation Worship returns with their most ambitious album to date. Fifteen tracks (with a couple of songs hovering around the 10-minute mark), this is a huge project clockwise as well as song wise. Musically, the album canvases a broader spectrum from rocking anthems to piano ballads to rootsy Gospel, the Elevation team seems to take more risks. LION is the follow-up to their highly acclaimed Graves Into Gardens (2020) and special collaboration project Old Church Basement (2021) with Maverick City Music.
LION brings a new perspective to Elevation’s collection, as their 14th album to date.
LION is a collection of both live and studio recorded songs captured over the past year. The project encompasses both congregational and personal songs that together reflect our love for God, as well as the joy and energy that’s been found in the writing of these songs. There is light and shade throughout this project, piano ballads and rock anthems, studio demos and songs recorded live with the Elevation Church, altogether creating this diverse grouping of tracks.
With the huge success trailing the previous two projects, expectations are high when it comes to LION. The Elevation team doesn't disappoint. In a genre that is currently inundated with slow pensive ballads, the rocking "What I See" is a much-anticipated track. Featuring an electric guitar-imbued undercurrent, "What I See" is a call to see how the resurrected Christ is still at work today. The pop-centric "Same God" has the word "classic worship song" written all over it. The title cut "LION," with its various depictions of Christ as presented in the book of Revelation, shows depth and maturity in the Elevation team's scribing skills.
“It’s not been written or recorded like any other album we’ve had,” Brown said in an interview with Jessie Clarks. “We didn’t start writing with a particular album or end goal in mind. We just began to create and capture songs throughout the year and eventually found ourselves with this collection of songs that we loved.”
The vibe of each song shifts in genre and beat. At one moment you may be listening to a piano-driven, meaningful ballad, and the next, be taken over by a jazzy beat or feel the bass vibrate through your chest.
One of the lead songs, ‘LION’ as well as ‘No One’, easily excites a crowd and gives off a rock feel, while, on the other hand, ‘Bye Bye Babylon’ and ‘Dancing’ will bring you into a moment of intimacy with God and touch your heart.
A lyric in ‘Bye Bye Babylon’ repeats ‘Abba’, meaning ‘God as our Father’. This paints a picture of God watching Jesus on the cross, delivering us from all of our sins.
As it says in Matthew 18:12-13, “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he will rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away!” (NLT), Brown ties the idea of this verse and ‘Bye Bye Babylon’ into a caption and a clip of a father, ‘Abba’, wandering in a field, searching for something, or someone.
