Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - leicht bestoßen, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / slightly scuffed otherwise perfect condition - In a new and controversial interpretation of the literary structure of Thucydides’ history of the Peloponnesian War, Hunter Rawlings contends that Thucydides consciously divided the war into two parallel ten-year conflicts with a period of nominal peace in the middle. This, he suggests, led the historian to make explicit and implicit comparisons and contrasts between the events in the two ten-year wars, even to the point of composing parallel speeches at critical points in each narrative. The author argues that by careful attention to selection, dramatic emphasis, and juxtaposition, Thucydides shaped his account of the war in order to show his readers how they should grasp the discrete events of history. -- Unlike previous commentators who analyze the composition of Thucydides’ history in an effort to determine when individual segments were written, Professor Rawlings takes the text in its known form as an incomplete final draft and asks how it was constructed and then why it was constructed as it was. His interpretation illuminates many of Thucydides’ historiographical perspectives: the reasons for Athens’ decline and fall; the effects of certain political leaders upon others; the historical relationships between events widely separated in time; and, most important, the necessity - in Thucydides’ view - for the intellectual control of historical events by the human mind.
