From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding light-margined, a bit dog-eared, otherwise clean. - From the text: The expression thýraze kíres-Kares, oúk et’ Ánthestíria was generally explained of the dead (kíres), who at the end of the Anthesteria were thought to have been driven out of the city and the houses of Athens. So it seemed to offer a welcome support to the theory that kír may sometimes indicate the soul of the dead. This view was recently and, so it seemed, effectively combated by Ganszyniec, who in Eranos 45 (1947), 100-113, put an end to the consensus of the critics. This scholar stated the incontestable fact that in the text of the Paroemiographers, by whom the saying was transmitted, the best MSS do not offer kíres but Káres. - Wikipedia: Marchinus Hyminus Arnoldus Leonardus Hendrikus van der Valk (* 1910; † January 5, 1992) was a Dutch classical philologist and theologian.
