Good condition. -- When Sir John Soane's house in Lincoln's Inn Fields was presented to the nation as a museum by Act of Parliament in 1833, it contained a remarkable collection of objects and works of art which had been amassed over his lifetime from his travels and from his friends and professional contacts. The Hogarths and Turners are well known, but there is also a vast number of drawings, clocks, models, manuscripts and objets d'art that were displayed throughout the house, and that represent more accurately the breadth of Soane's tastes and interests. -- For this book, the Curator Peter Thornton and his assistant Helen Dorey have selected over 120 objects, ranging from paintings and sculpture to a fine watch given by Queen Anne to Sir Christopher Wren and even a bill for the Axminster carpets orjdered for Soane's Library and Dining-Room. Photographs of each item have been specially taken for the book. Each picture is accompanied by a lively commentary that reveals something about the object and its history, but incidentally also throws light on Soane's life, character and interests. Most of the objects are dealt with in a sequence that follows Soane's original tour through his house; it is in many cases punctuated by charming contemporary views of the rooms, executed by his assistants. -- Soane was at the very centre of artistic activity in the late Georgian period, and his collections reflect the intellectual preoccupations of the time. His role as a collector is examined in an essay by Helen Dorey, which throws light on to a little-known aspect of the career of one of Britain's greatest architects. -- Peter Thornton's career began as a Voluntary Assistant Keeper at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Much of his subsequent work was carried out at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, first as Assistant Keeper in the Department of Textiles, and then as Keeper of the Department of Furniture and Woodwork from 1966 to 1984. He has been Curator of Sir John Soane's Museum since then. In 1985-86 he was Senior Visiting Research Fellow at St John's College, Oxford. He has been Chairman of the Furniture History Society, a member of the National Trust Committee and of the London Advisory Committee to English Heritage. Publications include Baroque and Rococo Silks (1965), Seventeenth Century Interior Decoration in England, France and Holland (1978) and Authentic Decor: The Domestic Interior 1620-1920 (1984). -- Helen Dorey read History at Christ Church, Oxford, and subsequently studied the History of Art at the Study Centre in London. She joined Sir John Soane's Museum in 1986 as Secretary (only the second person to hold that key appointment), but gradually took on an increasing load of curatorial work and is now the Curator's research assistant. She and the Curator have worked on this book from its inception. ISBN 9781856690294
