This is a lovely and very unusual antique Burmese handmade red (ie cinnabar) lacquerware bowl, made in the Yun style. It is decorated with bands of simply inscribed rings, both on the sides and base, clearly visible in the photos. There is also a band of simple floral motifs which contain vestiges of what appears to be black lacquer. The four characters written on the side may be later and appear to be Thai script and numerals.

It is in good condition for its age and the fact that it was made for use. There are a number of minor splits in the external lacquer, but these don't extend through the flexible, fibrous bamboo substrate to the inside. In other words, the bowl maintains its integrity and appears to be watertight. The bowl is 3.5 inches in diameter and 3 inches in height (9.5 x 7.5 cm).
