They constitute a major moral and ethical problem and have been widely discussed at philosophical seminars, symposia and congresses. They are the central theme of many collections of essays, articles and monographs during the last decade, and the need for their firm philosophical foundation is continuously felt. Most books on theoretical and practical ethics include a discussion of human rights. Although few philosophers nowadays can be called adherents of the doctrine of natural law, considering this doctrine to be an undisputable self-evident basis for human rights, nevertheless this law was invoked by the first Declaration of human rights; and the Universal Declaration in our century was viewed by some as a revival of the idea of natural law as conceived and elaborated by the Stoics. Among the many terms coined by the Stoics to meet new philosophical demands and the many concepts bequeathed to mankind, their idea of natural law proved to be perhaps their major contribution; in as much as it found with Cicero wide acceptance in the Roman world.
