Korea South 2022 "Modern Sculptors" Pair

Today, Korean sculpture has changed from realism to abstraction due to the influence of international thought, and the materials used are diversifying. Representative sculptors who led the growth of early abstract sculptures include Kim Jong-young and Kim Jung-sook.

Kim Jong-young (1915-1982), a pioneer of Korean abstract sculpture, is a writer who accepted Western art independently without bias in both East and West. Kim Jong-young, who learned Chinese from an early age as a sadist, looked at the oriental tradition of emphasizing the artist's will and the abstract art of the West on the same line. Kim Jong-young, who was the first Korean to win an award at the International Sculpture Competition held in London in May 1953, began to gain fame by presenting Korea's first abstract sculpture, "Bird," in December of the same year. He is a writer who pursues simplicity and naturalness, and he has produced most of them in his pocket, except for a few later years. As a result, he is considered a visionary of modern Korean sculpture by completing the "beauty of Buddha (not artificially carved)" that will remain in the history of Korean art in the 20th century.

Kim Jung-sook (1917-1991), a pioneer of modern Korean sculpture, is a first-generation female sculptor in Korea. Kim Jung-sook lived as an ordinary housewife and became a sculpture student at Hongik University at the age of 32. After learning iron carving and metal crafts in the U.S., he was appointed to Hongik University in 1957, and introduced the welding technology used only in construction sites to the sculpture education site, suggesting a new direction for modern sculpture in Korea. In the beginning, various materials such as wood, marble, and bronze were used as the subject of the human body, and in the latter half, abstract forms of work were developed. Representative works include the "Hat Statue" of the friendly formative beauty and the "Emergency" series, which consists of a simple appearance by expressing the shape of a bird in an abstract form.

This commemorative stamp contains "Picture 79-19," which contains the beauty of Buddha with Kim Jong-young, and "Existence," which simplifies the shape of Kim Jung-sook and humans. Kim Jong-young, who projected his noble character in his work, and Kim Jung-sook, who expressed warmth with a gentle curve.
