Here is a good condition, used Brass HOLMES ( formerly in Eastport, MAINE) sardine cannery piecework check tag or token, with number 33 .
It came in a box lot of odds and ends form the estate of an old time Maine watchmaker..
It is 1 1/2 inches across .
EACH SARDINE PACKER WAS ASSIGNED A NUMBER , AND A BATCH OF THESE CHECKS WITH HER NUMBER ( this is number 33) .
SHE WOULD ATTACH A CHECK TO EACH CARTLOAD OF SARDINES SHE HAD PACKED. AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE OFFICE WOULD CALCULATE HER WAGES BY A COUNT OF THE CHECKS.
The wet working conditions made these checks preferable to paper tickets. Not many of these are around today, since each one represented wages for quite a lot of work.
The Holmes Packing Co. was once a major sardine canner in Maine.
This check was probably used in the 1920 to 1970 era.
There have been no Maine sardine canners for over 10 years.
