This is a rather rare and unusual lacquered papier mâché plate, exported from China to Europe in the mid 19th century (probably around 1840-70). It would have attracted the upper middle classes.

It is quite a large plate - nearly 29 cm in diameter. It has a nice barbed shape and has a foot beneath. The main lacquer colour, both above and below, is black. The top of the plate is extensively and finely decorated in other lacquer colours, which now present as mid browns, cream and gilt. The decoration is very careful and detailed.

However, the lacquer has degraded somewhat over the long life of this plate. A very fine craquelure has developed on the upper surface and the lacquer colours have faded and lost much of their gloss. However, it is still a lovely thing.

The only major damage is a chip on the footrim, which does not disturb its display. It is about 3 cm long and can be clearly seen in the last few photos.
