Bemerkungen
Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - leicht berieben, Ecke leicht bestoßen, wenige Seiten weisen sehr leichte Knicke auf, sonst ein gutes Exemplar / slightly rubbed, corner lightly bumped, few pages have very light creases, otherwise a good copy. - IAMBLICHUS, whose life spanned the late third and early fourth centuries, was one of the most revered Platonist philosophers. The Emperor Julian, who ranked him with Plato, planned to use his work as the philosophical basis for a revival of pagan religion to meet the Christian challenge. Iamblichus wrote The Pythagorean Life as the first of ten volumes on the philosophy of Pythagoras. It is the most extensive surviving source on Pythagoreanism and has wider interest as an account of the religious aspirations of late antiquity. Iamblichus’s purpose was not to write a historical biography but to use Pythagoras as an example and inspiration for the philosophic life which can raise human souls to the divine. His Pythagoras combines divine inspiration and origin, superhuman powers and towering intellect, and draws on both Greek and Eastern religion and learning to establish a personal discipline and a communal lifestyle unique in Graeco-Roman tradition. The introduction and commentary aim to set the Life in its double context of Pythagorean tradition and pagan-Christian debate, and to interpret historical allusions and Pythagorean and Platonist teaching.
