This is a stunning one of a kind period gallery quality find by maker Thomas Parr, an important design rarely seen in collections and museums alike. One of the finest surviving examples as a pair in this style that I know of. Here we see two marvelous figural group depictions featuring American literary characters Uncle Tom and Eva from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s mid-19th century novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Faded text to base reads on three lines, “Eva gaily laughing was/hanging a wreath of roses/‘round Tom’s neck.” This historically significant pair is a treasure to own and showcase in any serious collection. Purchased England. Minimal light post production wear to paint in places.
