Description of the work.

We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from the rare first edition of  "Nauterwkeuige Beschrving der Aaedgewsse", published in Utretch in 1696 by Munting.

This monumental work was a magnificently innovative illustrated botanical work depicting larger than life plants in landscapes by Abraham Munting (1626-1683). Munting, the Dutch professor and botanist at the University of Groningen, innovated the florilegium book with this publication by placing the plants against detailed landscape backgrounds filled with learned references to the classics or other sources. Each plate depicts a different plant in flower, with banderoles or marble plaques with its name, incl. many exotic species from America. "The plates are as curious as their subjects. They commonly present the plants far larger than life, oranges huge as pumpkins, cyclamens with heavy corms floating lightly in mid-air, gentle geraniums grown into giant trees. The effect is obtained through sketching in classical or idyllic or mountainous little landscapes below" (Hunt).

Each print in folio edition measure approximately 111/4 by 14” ½  (28,5 by 44,5 cm)

The condition of these prints is superb, with characteristic strong plate.  Wonderful chained hand made paper . There is no foxing on clean paper.

There is no descriptive text.
