The war of 1812 can be seen as one of the most pivotal and galvanizing events in Canadian history. Although, at the time, Canada remained a British colony, the war helped to instill a sense of national pride and sovereignty within the Great Nation. In the wake of the aftermath of the "Chesapeake affair" of 1807, which involved the British instigating an attack on American warships, in which 17 American seamen were killed, President James Madison declared war on Britain. The war would be instigated by way of the British-controlled landmass above the United States, known today as Canada. It was presumed that Canada would be of little threat to America and little help to their British allies. Instead, the war galvanized the Nation, the individuals living in Canada, the First Nations who fought alongside the British, and freed African slaves who strove to fight for the Canadian cause. At the war's conclusion, tens of thousands of men gave their lives. However, the foundation was set for the birth of a Great Nation. Canada gained its own independence on July 1st, 1867. This spectacular 1/2 oz 9995 Fine Platinum coin pays homage to this war and the Nations that took part in it.
