MANUFACTURER DESCRIPTION:

The HP 8403A Modulator is a dual function modulation unit that can be used to provide two simultaneous modulation output signals. One modulation output provides pulse and square wave modulation signals for general applications, such as modulating an RF signal generator. The other modulation output provides specially shaped modulating signals for modulating the HP Model 8730 series of PIN Modulators.

Internally generated pulse and square-wave modulating signals, which are adjustable in rate from 50Hz to 50 KHz, are available at either modulation output.

In addition, externally applied pulse – and amplitude-modulation signals may be applied to the 8403A. However, amplitude modulation signals will only be available at the modulation output for use with PIN Modulators, while the externally applied pulse modulation signals are available at both outputs.

For internally generate pulse modes of operation (internally or externally synchronized) synchronizing and delayed synchronizing pulse outputs are available. In all other modes of operation, except AM where no sync output is available, only a synchronizing output which is coincident with the leading edge of the modulating output signal is available.

TESTS/REMARKS:

• 0.8 – 2.4GHz
• The square wave internal modulation source works fine. The pulse internal modulation source does not appear to function.
• The input was driven from a function generator 5V 1 kHz square wave. 
• The AM external input does not appear to be functioning. 
• The pulse input is working fine.
