This serial is story number 51 and isthe first serial of the seventh season of the series. It was originallytransmitted in four weekly parts on BBC1 from 3 to 24 January 1970. It was thefirst “Doctor Who” serial to be produced in colour and the only one to be madeentirely on 16 mm film.
In the serial, which is set in Essexand London, the alien time-travelling Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), now exiled toEarth by the Time Lords, joins Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)of UNIT and the scientist Liz Shaw (Caroline John) to stop the incorporealintelligence the Nestenes from colonising the planet through their use of theAutons, plastic killers which act as human duplicates and shop-windowmannequins.
The serial introduced Pertwee as theDoctor and was the first to feature the Autons. It also introduces CarolineJohn as the Doctor's new assistant, Liz. Nicholas Courtney becomes a regularcast member beginning with this serial.
“DoctorWho” is a British science fiction television series broadcast by the BBC since1963. The series depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called The Doctor, anextraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores theuniverse in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS (“Time and RelativeDimension in Space”). There was an unsuccessful attempt torevive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot in the form of a BBC-FoxNetwork co-production television film titled “Doctor Who”. The series wasrelaunched in 2005 and since then, has been produced in-house by BBC Wales inCardiff. “Doctor Who” has also spawned numerous spin-offs, including comicbooks, films, novels, audio dramas, and the television series “Torchwood”(2006–2011), “The Sarah Jane Adventures” (2007–2011), “K9” (2009–2010), and “Class”(2016). It has been the subject of many parodies and references in popularculture.
