Antique Shaker Document Box, 1830s Red Paint Decorated  Box,  Folk Art Americana Box, Initials LS

This offering is a beautifully constructed circa 1830 Shaker box in red paint, folk art Americana keepsake or document box. This is a very handsome paint decorated document box with square nails, with a stepped bottom, and all sides including the back are painted red.
Constructed of pine wood with great color and age alligator texture to the paint. Hand painted on lid and box are two initials "L" "S" in gold paint with black paint to highlight giving dimension. A diamond shaped inlaid piece around the keyhole. Not sure of the material used. The lock and the latch are original.

The box opens via a double hinged lid, and contains two original old hinges. As shown in photographs. And, yes it smells like 1830 inside, just lovely smell, this 1830's smell that only comes with age. I have noticed that each 10 years there is a different odor, that is distinctive with each decade. Has a bread board top.

Box measures 11 inches in length x 6-1/2 inches in width x 5-1/2 inches high.

This box is large enough for storing documents, keepsake, memento storage box, hope chest, paper accumulations, a catch all, or storage for small candles.   Would look super displayed in your early cupboard or anywhere in your early home. A good size for the top of a stack.
This is a decorative, quality item that has a variety of potential uses. The perfect addition to your shaker collection and folk art inspired interior.

The condition is very good condition with wonderful age patina, and aged paint but not perfect, it has been used for decades.  With small scratches, scuffs at both front corners of lid, and one small chip at corner, no cracks in wood,  as seen in photos. I have not tried to clean or alter in any way. As found from a old country farmhouse estate auction in Western New York.  Box is sturdy and solid with no major problems. It does have some minor scuffs and marks which are age appropriate. Last photo shows small holes in top lid at corner.

Document boxes of this size and condition are hard to find. Don't let this one get away. A wonderful worthy example to add to a collection or start one, a real beauty!!
