FINE 1800's ANTIQUE 3-D EMBOSSED HUNTING SCENE WOODEN FOLK ART SNUFF BOX
This
is Antique 19th Century 3-dimensional pressed design wooden snuff box with a
Hunting Scene depicting 2 hunters (one with a rifle), 2 hunting dogs and a
slain deer on the lid, circa 1875-1900. This box is about 3 5/8" wide X 1
13/16" deep X 1" tall. The top and 4 sides are overlaid with a thin
veneer of select grained pressed light tan colored wood that is embossed in a 3-dimensional
pattern. The 4 sides are embossed in a vertical multiple fine line pattern. The
top is deeply embossed in a hunting scene with a forest in the background. The
top is attached to the base by two small arms that pivot on small nails, and
the top lid curves outward in front so that it creates a lip in the front for
opening. There are 2 small surface chips of the thin veneer that have flaked off
at the back corner hinges, but are not distracting overall. Probably some tan
polish could make this slight discoloration blend in, but I have left this in
untouched, as found condition. The inside of the top has a thick L shaped piece
of wood; the front lip keeping the contents of the box securely inside. Both
the lid and base are stamped "65", suggesting this piece is a limited
production. This is a charming piece of Folk Art in excellent condition for its
age. These boxes are known to have a variety of different scenes, depictions
& themes on the top, but this one has a scarce and desirable hunting theme.
This was used as a tabletop piece, and so the lid doesn't fit tightly as a
travel pocket snuff box would have. Weight is 1.6 oz. This would be perfect for
any hunting, hunter, dog, hunting dog, snuff, snuff box or tobacco collection /
display; or use for keepsakes / a ring box / jewelry box / knack knacks, or as
a paper weight / desk accessory / conversation piece / gift.
