First American edition, first printing, with no statement of printing on the title page. The "Superior Cloth" issue with full gilt edges. A collector's copy of Stirner's magnum opus, a post-Hegelian savaging of Christianity, morality, liberalism, socialism, etc. Long considered one of the most controversial works in the history of Western philosophy, the title was banned in numerous cities upon its first publication in German in 1844. It was not brought out in English until this edition in 1907, when famous egoist/ individualist anarchist Benjamin R. Tucker put out this edition. Also laid in is a promotional broadside measuring 16" x 5.5"
