Description: This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: 'Vorstelijcke Warande der Dieren ... door J. v. V.', first published in 1617. This is a well-known book of emblematic animal stories in verse. Each plate is accompanied by a quotation from a classical author in Dutch prose below, and a poem by Vondel on the facing page. This edition was published by Gysbert de Groot (heirs), Amsterdam. c. 1720.
Artists and Engravers: The author and poet of this work is Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679). He was a Dutch writer and playwright. He is considered the most prominent Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th century. The engraving are engraved by the Flemish engraver Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (c. 1520 - c. 1590) in c. 1567.
