From the Foreword: Rock paintings are deteriorating rapidly due to natural factors such as erosion. Traditionally they were regularly touched up or repainted during annual ceremonies, but Aboriginal rock painting has now ceased. Sadly, this means that in fifty years time little will remain of the colourful paintings one sees at present. In this situation a photographic archive is vital, which is one service provided by this book's authors. Yet Ancient Ochres is far more than a beautiful pictorial record or catalogue. Early chapters are devoted to discussions of the land, its people and their history and the art, meaning and role of rock painting in the Mt Borradaile area and Arnhem Land as a whole.'
