Mid 20th Century Carved Nawa Sari Wood Keris Kris Handle Hilt

Region: Bali Indonesia:

Length: 5.25 inches / 13.5cm

Height including stand: 8.5 inches / 21cm

Having resided in South East Asia and the Pacific region for several decades I've a developed passion for and a trading interest in artefacts of the region. This artefact is part of a large collection that I’m selling to downsize.

A nicely detailed keris handle depicting Nawa Sari - carved from hardwood ebony. The Nawa Sari image is frequently encountered in Bali at or near the entrance to a shrine or temple and sometimes near the entrance to an important building.

In Bali the Nawa Sari is regarded as one of the most powerful guardian figures -  and when employed as the hilt of a keris his function is the same as near a shrine or building entrance. Nawa Sari guards the keris against the possibility of an evil entity.
