Which timing is right for my car/track?
Motor timing is a complex topic. In a nutshell, we can alter motor timing to tailor the power band of a given motor. In general, increasing timing trades low-end torque for increased high-end RPM. The result is a car that's less snappy and more controllable on the low end, and faster up top. Similarly, reducing timing trades RPM for torque, which can be advantageous on short, tight layouts where more punch is preferable to higher top speed.
Note that as timing gets more aggressive, it will typically generate more heat as well.
The other consideration is whether you're running a three-gear or four-gear chassis. The motor in a four-gear chassis spins in the reverse orientation from a three-gear version. So, to get the effects of advanced timing on a four-gear, you will want to select the negative timing versions of the commutators.
In short, it works something like this:
- +5 deg = Good performance boost on 3-gear chassis for short and medium length tracks.
- +10 deg = Aggressive performance boost on 3-gear chassis for medium and long length tracks.
- +15 deg = Extreme performance boost on 3-gear chassis. Recommended for drag race only.
- -5 deg = Good performance boost on 4-gear chassis for short and medium length tracks.
- -10 deg = Aggressive performance boost on 4-gear chassis for medium and long length tracks.
- -15 deg = Extreme performance boost on 4-gear chassis. Recommended for drag race only.
These are only guidelines. Feel free to experiment and find the sweet spot for your track and driving style!
