An amazing and very rare textile! One of my favorites!! ~ This gorgeous antique French quilt dates from the very early 1800's. The front is made from a wonderful muted, dusty olive green and indigo check linen, hand-woven and hand dyed. Green as a one step dying process was or printing process was not developed until 1809 and this would have been one of the first textiles to use this process , a rare and stunning find. There are 2 of the most glorious patches ( dating very early 1800's) on the front of this quilt, using a block printed fabric, with wonderful pin wheel , floral and foliage print. The greens in these patches were achieved by overdyeing. The patch fabric would have been first coated with a resist substance ( usually a wax) and then dyed indigo blue. The fabric would have been coated with another layer of wax, concealing the print, and then again dyed using indigo blue to create both shades of light and dark blue. The yellow was then block printed on to the fabric, using hand carved wooden blocks, and the green is a result of the yellow being dyed over the blue. This textile is backed in a very heavy , homespun hemp and hand stitched using a very heavy hemp thread. This textile is 100% hand stitched and hand quilted. It is a very dense and very heavy weight textile, with a thick dense cotton batting in between the front and back fabrics. It is a very rare and wonderful find. *~
