  • This design is primarily now known as a Buffalo nickel and colloquially as an Indian Head nickel. It was struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938.
  • Both the obverse and reverse designs are by sculptor James Earle Fraser. He was born on November 4, 1876 in Minnesota, USA, and died on October 11, 1953 in Connecticut. Besides this nickel design his other most famous piece is End of the Trail. He also did many sculptures, statues, and medals.

  • If it has not worn off there is an incused letter "F" below the year/date. This is an initial for Fraser.

  • The Reverse-side Text Inscriptions: UNITED•STATES•OF•AMERICA E PLURIBUS UNUM FIVE CENTS
  • If the coin bears a mint mark it would be below Five Cents on the reverse.

  • Liberty is defined as the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
  • E PLURIBUS UNUM roughly translates from Latin to: Out of many, one - which was the common motto from the USA seal from the late 1700's until 1956 when the motto officially became In God We Trust. This coin only had the first common motto.
