British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph

NAPOLEON III, nephew of Napoleon I & the son of Louis Bonaparte, France

French History Illustration Print

This item is a charming, smaller, modern (late c1990s), color print illustrating one or more of the Kings and Sovereigns (with their consorts) who occupied the throne of France dating from the early 400s to the period following the French Revolution, from 1804 to 1870. The image in this illustration, and other prints from this series in my store, was used in school textbooks and also appeared on advertising cigarette cards.

This illustration is from a volume by Guillaume Picon & Katia Boudoyan and published in France by Hachette Prat.

Print depicts:  Born in 1808, this nephew of Napoleon I was the son of Louis Bonaparte, short-lived King of Holland, and Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Empress Josephine. When the Empire fell, his mother took him to Switzerland, from where he flew to Rome in 1830 to take part in a conspiracy by carbonari, members of a secret society. He retains from this experience a certain taste for plotting. Thus, in 1836 in Strasbourg then in 1840 in Boulogne, he tried to raise regiments. Which earned him to spend six years at Fort Ham, where he wrote The Extinction of Pauperism, a work that won him the sympathy of the Republican left. The revolution of February 1848 opened the doors to an unexpected career for him. Elected deputy, he ran for the presidency of the Republic in 1848. With success. Unable to run for a second term, he organized a coup that led to the proclamation of the Empire a year later, on December 2, 1852.

The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
