Artwork detail
This is one of the "Tokyo Twenty Views" by Kawase Tomoe Sui, one of the leading artists of new prints, depicting scenes of various places in Tokyo. The location of the painting is estimated to be around Magome, Tokyo. The three pine trees in the work are said to be gone now, but it is said that they existed at the time, as shown in the work, in a rural poetic style. The full moon peeks out from behind the majestic pine trees in the painting. The shading of the night sky in the moonlight is extremely beautiful, and the composition has a mysterious flavor, as if one were standing in the night in Magome in the early Showa period. Tomoe's distinctive clear blue is also known as "Tomoe Blue," and is extremely popular among fans of new prints. Magome no Tsuki" is also known as one of Tomoe Sui's best-known works due to its high degree of perfection.
