FROM MADEIRA WITH LOVE...!

Found in an estate liquidation on Madeira Island Portugal, from a mid 19th Century Portuguese homestead.

Antique storage box, possibly dating from the late 1800s, expertly crafted from a wood indigenous to Madeira Island, Vinhatico Mahogany.  There are collectors on the island that collect anything made of this wood since over harvesting a century ago have made it a rarity.

A classic form with fine dovetailing and an old varnished finish, it is obviously from the workshop of an accomplished joiner.

This type of box was used to store spices, tea or some other costly commodity.

It has survived in very good condition.  No cracks in the wood, the lid secure, not worn or wobbly.  The only flaw I could find was a chipped corner on the lid panel that I have illustrated.

The box measures 4 Inches high, 6 inches long and 4 1/2 inches wide.

I have inserted a standard size playing card in one photo as a reference for size.
