Das Herzogtum Braunschweig wurde 1814 nach dem Wiener Kongress in der Nachfolge des Fürstentums Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel begründet. Seine Wurzeln liegen im Herzogtum Braunschweig-Lüneburg, das 1235 durch Aufteilung des sächsischen Stammesherzogtums der Welfen entstand. Nach der Novemberrevolution in Braunschweig von 1918 wandelte es sich in den Freistaat Braunschweig um.
The Duchy of Brunswick (German: Herzogtum Braunschweig) was a historical German state. Its capital was the city of Brunswick (Braunschweig). It was established as the successor state of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In the course of the 19th-century history of Germany, the duchy was part of the German Confederation, the North German Confederation and from 1871 the German Empire. It was disestablished after the end of World War I, its territory incorporated into the Weimar Republic as the Free State of Brunswick.
Le duché de Brunswick est une principauté allemande fondée en 1815 par le Congrès de Vienne. Elle succède à la principauté de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, qui avait été annexée en 1807 par le royaume de Westphalie.
Le premier duc, Charles II, doit abdiquer après une insurrection en 1830. Son frère cadet Guillaume lui succède. Sous son règne, le Brunswick adhère à la Confédération de l'Allemagne du Nord, puis à l'Empire allemand. À sa mort, en 1884, la lignée de Wolfenbüttel s'éteint. Son héritier selon les lois successorales du duché est le duc de Cumberland, mais ce candidat ne plaît pas à la Prusse. Le duché est gouverné par des régents jusqu'en 1913, date à laquelle Ernest-Auguste, fils du duc de Cumberland, devient duc. Il abdique comme les autres princes allemands en 1918.
