The Royal Air Force – known by the initials RAF – was established on 1 April 1918 as the aviation branch of the British Armed Forces. Today it is considered the oldest air force in the world. After World War I it shrunk drastically and the interwar years were quite calm. However, this situation changed just before the outbreak of World War II and during the conflict it developed rapidly. The participation of its pilots in the Battle of England was decisive. Their uniform consisted of a blue tunic with gilt buttons, a leather helmet, goggles, the B3 lifejacket and 1939 Pattern boots.
