British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph

Title  "Mrs. Mary Robinson" engraved by J. R. Smith

Artist: George Romney. Romney was an English portrait painter. He was the most fashionable artist of his day, painting many leading society figures – including his artistic muse, Emma Hamilton, mistress of Lord Nelson.

Romney presents Mary Robinson in a fairly plain but fashionable costume (this is in direct contrast to Gainsborough’s portrait of the sitter, which alludes to her celebrity). The facial expression is also notable, as she raises one eyebrow, as if tempting the viewer to challenge her.

Mrs Robinson (1758–1800) became the first mistress of the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1779. She earned the nickname ‘Perdita’ from her memorable performance in 'The Winter’s Tale' at the Drury Lane Theatre where she attracted the attention of the seventeen year old prince. She was painted by the leading portraitists of the day: Reynolds (Reynolds P45), Gainsborough (Gainsborough P42) and Romney.

The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.).  While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
