ANTIQUECHESSCRAFTS proud to offer-This chess design is named after Mr. Emil Kemeny, an American chess master. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he resided for many years in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Midway through the 1890s, Kemeny was one of the finest competitors in the United States. He placed second at Skaneateles 1891, fell to James Moore Hanham (4–5) at New York 1891, and triumphed at Skaneateles 1892. He also won the 1892–93 Franklin Chess Club championship tournament, as well as the Championship of Philadelphia, the nation's second-strongest chess metropolis, with a 14–4 score, one point ahead of Walter Penn Shipley. Kemény won the next Franklin and municipal championship in 1893-94 with a 23-1 record, three points clear of Mordecai Morgan and four and a half ahead of Hermann G. Voigt. In 1896, he challenged U.S. Champion Jackson Whipps Showalter to a match, which Kemeny lost with a cumulative score of +4 –7 =4.
He published correspondence chess games in the Philadelphia Public Ledger between January and July 1897. In 1903, Kemeny travelled to Monte Carlo to report for the North American on the Monte Carlo Chess Tournament. He published a weekly titled American Chess Weekly in Philadelphia for one year.
He tied for fourth or fifth at Philadelphia in 1898, first at Philadelphia in 1899 and 1900, third at Philadelphia in 1900 and 1901, and fourth at St. Louis in 1904.
Emény participated in multiple matches (New York City CC versus Brooklyn CC, New York State versus Pennsylvania, Chicago CC versus Manhattan CC, Chicago CC versus Brooklyn CC, and Chicago CC versus Franklin CC).
In the first decade of the 20th century, he returned to his native country, where he perished in the city of his origin in 1925.
