An OBI strip is a piece of paper wrapped around the spine of Japanese vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, movies, or books sometimes. OBI was introduced in Japan as a way of providing Kanji translations to overseas vinyl records or CDs which were importing into Japan. Also now OBIs are a standard part of a new items providing catalog numbers, barcodes and other information that usually are the back of covers. Most people simply were discarding and ignoring them after unwrapping since the info contained on them are mainly for the seller and not for the buyer. But to the collector market they’re a rare commodity that can increase the collector price of such records.
Japanese vinyl record without OBI looks like an antique waiting for renovation.
