Note: The description on the reverse describes "The Ring of the Nibelung. - The Festival House at Bayreuth" --But Scene in the print is "Richard Wagner's Dream" from the painting by 19th Century Austrian painter Carl Schweninger. The print shows Wagner, the famous German composer, in the foreground, left, in front of his piano. On the wall, left above the piano, is a portrait of F. Liszt. In the foreground, right, you will find a footstool on which rests a violin and sheet music. Above and behind, right, we see a montage of Wagnerian characters, including: at left, the Rhinedaughters, with Alberich (his back to us); above them, from left, a figure in a winged helmet and a young woman (probably intended as Siegmund and Sieglinde), to their right a figure with sword and horn (possibly Siegfried), and Brünnhilde with Grane. To the right of the Rhinedaughters, a pair kissing, then Eva crowning Walther with laurels, and (dominating the picture within a picture) Lohengrin in a boat drawn by a swan. To the right, Tannhäuser with Venus. Above them, a couple in front of a sinking ship (probably the Dutchman and Senta) and in the top right, Wotan with two figures, who could be Siegfried and Brünnhilde.                    BUT, THE DESCRIPTION ON REVERSE discusses Wagner's Festspielhaus or Bayreuth Festival Theater, an opera house north of Bayreuth, Germany, built by the 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner and dedicated solely to the performance of his stage works.

Great image over 100+ years ago

This is an original period intaglio-gravure print.

This print is from an issue of The Mentor magazine, which was first published in 1913 (thru 1931) by The Mentor Association, "Established for the Development of a Popular Interest in Art, Literature, Science, History, Nature and Travel". The Mentor Library was vast and covered a wide range of interesting topics. Many of the covers themselves (especially the later color ones) are all very artistic and fine works of art, and are highly collectible!
