In 1898, the Belgian company “Tramways de Carthagène Societé Anonyme Belge” was created, represented in Spain by Joaquín Díaz Zapata, an electrical entrepreneur known in Cartagena for his ideas for the installation and supply of light to individuals. In December of this same year he presented the project for the Puertas de Madrid to Los Molinos line, which was approved in May 1899. By then the tram fare was 10 cents.
On March 31, 1900, the direct tram line Puerta de Murcia to Los Molinos was inaugurated, with a new car pulled by five mules and making the journey without stops in 16 minutes. He returned to the city for the new extension of the line that passed through Jabonerías Street.

Felipe García Mauriño y del Valle, was appointed new delegate of the company “Tramways de Carthagène Societé Anonyme Belge”, known as “Tranvías Reunidos” or “Tramways de Cartagena”. On June 10, 1905, when Mr. Juan Sánchez Doménech was Mayor of Cartagena, the company received authorization to operate an electric tram line, which represented a great social advance.
Between 1905 and 1907 the blood-powered tram was replaced by the electric one. By then the lines controlled by the “Tranvías de Cartagena” company reached 5 km in the direction of Los Dolores and another 3 km towards Los Molinos.....
