  • Some very general background information: The sacred clowns are jokers, jesters, or tricksters in the Kachina religion of the Pueblo Indians of the southwestern United States. The Koshare is also known as Koyaala or Hano clown. Koshare is the term for it in the Keres Pueblo People. Puebloans speak about four different languages and the Keres also have a sign language. Other well-known Puebloans are the Taos, Acoma, Zuni, and Hopi groups for example. Typically the cones on the head are made from their hair and bound into two bunches to stand upright on each side of the head and adorned with corn husks (maize). They use various gourds as representation of fruitfulness, but typically in artwork the artists uses watermelons.
