The US Navy was created in 1775, during the War of Independence, and in a short time established itself as one of the most powerful in the world. During the interwar period it was left with only a number of newly built British ships. The battleships were accompanied by a large number of cruisers and destroyers. After the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor, the Americans built the Essex-class aircraft carriers, which played a decisive role in the conflicts in the Pacific during World War II. The sailors were the most numerous group of men in the fleet. The most characteristic element of their uniform is the pelvis, known as the "dixie cup".
