Jules Eugène Louis Jouvet ( French: Jules Eugène Louis Jouvet ; born December 24, 1887 , Crozon , Finistère, France  ; August 16, 1951 , Paris , France ) is a French theater and film actor and director. 

Louis Jouvet was born on December 24, 1887 in Crozon , Finistère department in France. He spent his childhood in Brittany . At the age of 14 he lost his father and was raised by his uncle, a pharmacist in the Ardennes . From 1904 he studied in Paris as a pharmacist, but spent all his free time in theaters. Three times he failed the exams at the Higher Conservatory of Dramatic Art . In 1913, together with his friend Charles Dullen, he joined the troupe of the Jacques Copo Theater "Old Dovecote " ( fr. Le théâtre du Vieux-Colombier), where he worked as a director, set designer, actor (while he stuttered, but skillfully hid his flaw with a special chanting pronunciation, which later became famous). 

In 1914-1917 Jouvet was a doctor on the fronts of the First World War . In 1922 he began to work independently in the theater on the Champs Elysees . In 1923 he successfully staged Jules Romain 's play "Knock, or the Solemnity of Medicine." In 1927 he began his long-term collaboration with the writer Jean Giraud .

 

On July 6, 1927, together with Gaston Bati , S. Dullen and Georges Pitoev, Jouvet created the director's "Cartel of Four" (which lasted until 1940), the aim of which was to return to the stage the poetry of theatrical performance and modern authors. In 1930-1932 Zhuve personal secretary was Jean Anouilh [1]  

From 1935, Louis Jouvet directed the Athenaeum Theater (now named after him); refused the offer to head the Comedy Française . In 1941, from occupied France with the troupe he went to Latin America and returned only at the end of 1944 [2] . 

In 1950, Louis Jouvet was awarded the Legion of Honor . In 1951, he directed Sartre's drama The Devil and the Lord God; supported the creative pursuits of Jean-Louis Barrot and Jean Vilar .

Personal life

From 1912, Louis Jouvet was married to Elsa Collen, with whom he had three children: Jean-Paul, Anne-Marie and Lisa, who became an actress (1924-2004). The actor was a caring father, a good family man and at the same time - a great lover of women. 

Louis Zhuve died August 16, 1951 from a heart attack on multiple rehearsals of the play Graham Green's "Power and Glory"
