Cassolettes were vases or containers (perfume burners) which were placed on the upper edge of the fireplace mantel in pairs or one on each side next to a clock or a pendulum clock (we also suggest the bookend function) 

Were very often made of precious metal, bronze or precious marble

This pair belongs to this last category, in fact it is composed of a rare types of Italian marble

 This two ornaments were produced in France between 1880-1910
