The Pretenders eighth studio album, Loose Screw, arrived to widespread acclaim in late 2002. It was, as is customary, full of classy Chrissie Hynde compositions. Lie To Me, Fools Must Die, the reggae-influenced Complex Person, the lissome Walk Like A Panther and Nothing Breaks Like A Heart (partially inspired by L.A.'s earthquakes) are among its more immediate delights and all serve to remind us how influential Chrissie has been as a singer/songwriter/frontperson. Many of these new songs have since become live favourites and they can be experienced here (when they were still brand new) on the accompanying DVD. Recorded at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles in February 2003, it captures the band in superlative form. And while the songs from Loose Screw undoubtedly cut the mustard, the set is also laced with dynamic versions of durable Pretenders classics, such as Don't Get Me Wrong, Back On The Chain Gang, Middle Of The Road, Mystery Achievement and, of course, Brass In Pocket.
