Kriegsmarine was one of the three branches of the Third Reich's armed forces. Its ranks included submarines, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, several auxiliary vessels and an unfinished aircraft carrier. Although Hitler did not fully trust their capabilities, he was forced to accept the obvious: that submarines (U-Boots) could be the most effective weapon for sinking Allied ships in the Atlantic and North Seas. The officers differed from the rest of the navy. Their sloppy appearance was characterized by a crimson dark gray navy jacket, a rather thick sweater, the characteristic white cap, their tall, black boots and their integral binoculars. They remained active until 1945.
