Here we have Goethe’s Faust in a beautiful ornate leather binding. Front cover features 6 cameo medallions of various characters from the play. I believe all the metal is silver plated bronze. But was also told it could be .800 coin silver… Text is profusely illustrated with decorative elements, scenes, & arches. Many full page photolithograph illustrations as well. The famed Auguste von Kreiling is the author of the illustrations.

Folio: 20.5 X 15.5 X 2.5 inches

Front hinge starting about 3 inches.. Soiling to back cover, small bit to front cover. Weight of text block & front cover has cause a slight bow most noticeable to rear cover. As the corners are suspended by studs on the metal corners.

Undated. As far as my research has shown this edition of Faust was in print for 3 years. How many were produced is unknown as records are lost. This is the 1875 German edition, which inspired Queen Victoria to request that an edition in English be done. 1876-1877 saw editions done in English. The most famous copy was an 1876 English edition signed by queen Victoria & gifted to Benjamin Disraeli, still on display today at the Hughenden mansion. In 1877 a series of English editions were continued by Friedrich Bruckmann.

Given the context, this is the 1875 first edition as the text is in German & published by München & Berlin.
