A scarce two volume set of works which discusses the trail of the voyage of the Jeannette and the death of its many crew members. This work has been edited by the Ship captain's wife, Emma De Long. Illustrated throughout, Publishers' Original Bindings. The illustrated journals of Lieutenant-Commander, George W. De Long. George W. De Long was a naval officer and explorer, who is best remembered for his role as the leader of the Jeannette Expedition of the late 19th century. This expedition saw a U.S. ship seek to travel to the North Pole via the Bering Strait. This journey resulted in the death of many crew members, including De Long. This particular set of work was edited by De Long's wife, Emma De Long.

Volume 1 with portrait frontispiece. Engraved portrait of James Gordon Bennet. Six monochrome plated on wood. 25 vignettes to the text. 2 Plates of Maps, 1 double plate chart, 4 maps in text, and folding chart to the back pocket [collates as complete]

Volume 2: With tinted lithograph frontispiece, 7 plates on wood. 15 Vignettes, 2 folding coloured charts, 2 full page plans of the Jeanette. 2 pages of Captain De Longs Journal. Plan of the last camp on plate, 2 pages of plates showing "A vessel designed for arctic exploration" and vignettes, charts and diagrams. [collates as complete]   


Condition: See photos as part of condition report: Both volumes uniformly bound in the original brown and pictorial publishers cloth.  Some fraying to the head and the feet of the spines [mostly short closed tears to the cloth, please see photos.] some light rubbing to the hinges. Bindings remain firm. Both volumes collate as complete with all pages and plates present. The paper splitting to the pastedowns gutters Text blocks firm, lightly browned page edges and occasional marks to the two volumes pages. A rarely seen U.S set. NOTE: The two charts on thin paper torn to the gutter, and one other map torn into three [please see photo].
