About 8 years ago, a similar Mathewson "Special Order" document (dated 2 weeks earlier than this one) surfaced at auction and sold for over $5,000. Why such historical significance? Because it was Matty's service in the American Expeditionary Forces that ultimately exposed him to chemical gas, resulting in his premature death in 1925 at age 45. Dated September 23, 1918, the confidential notification appears on an 8-1/2" x 5-1/4" sheet of onion-skin paper from the headquarters of Brigadier General Coulter and Adjutant General Pearman. It describes Mathewson's station relocations in France and then concludes, "Capt. Christopher Mathewson, C.W.S. / The travel herein directed is necessary in the military service." Thus, the die was cast. Chemical exposure in October and November eventually led to a weakened immune system and a lethal case of tuberculosis. There is tremendous investment potential here, especially with the addition of proper framing alongside a well-chosen vintage photo.

VG condition.

UPDATE ON COMBINED SHIPPING: Per eBay policy, all cards won for $250+ will be sent for authentication. Information on this policy can be found here: https://pages.ebay.com/authenticity-guarantee-tradingcards/

If you win a card that ends at $250+ plus less expensive cards, you will receive two invoices - one with cards that sold for under $250, and another for cards that sold for $250+. There will be a separate shipping charge for each invoice. This is because eBay requires shipment to two different destinations. If you win more than 40 cards, please contact us for shipping fee adjustments.  Please contact us in the eBay message center with any questions. We reply to messages Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT.
