Description: This print originates from: "Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour" and "Handley Cross, or Mr. Jorrocks's Hunt" by Robert Smith Surtees. Published: London, Bradbury Agnew, 1853.
Artists and Engravers: Designed and engraved by John Leech (1817-1864), was born in London as the son of a London coffee house landlord. He was eighteen when his first designs were published, a quarto of four pages, entitled Etchings and Sketchings by A. Pen, Esq., comic character studies from the London streets. From 1841 he also contributed work to Punch magazine, and it is this work which is seen as his best. However, these illustrations to Surtees' works also rank among his finest work.
