The black lacquer highlights the ornate gilt edges and floral design in gold, maroon, and green. The graduated sizes and colorful design make this a rare find.

The papier mache process created remarkably durable pieces and was traditionally used for a variety of household objects and furniture. This set of  trays shows signs of use and wear which is consistent with their nearly 200 years of history. The trays appear structurally sound with the losses restricted to the edges.
