The 1st Infantry Division of the Imperial Japanese Army was the country's oldest until World War II. The political situation that existed in the Land of the Rising Sun in the late 1930s and the conflicts within the military had serious implications for various officials who were in favor of social reforms. Between 1937 and 1939 this historic division was based in Manchuria (China) and tasked with protecting the northern border against a possible attack by Soviet troops. He was later transferred to the Philippines. Non-commissioned officers of the infantry wore an olive tunic, the field platoon, trousers of the same cloth as the tunic, and leather boots. They carried the 'gunto' sword and a belt with a cross strap.
