The violoncello piccolo is one of the numerous cello variants that were developed during the 17th century. and XVIII. century arose.
Slightly smaller than a modern cello as we know it today, the violoncello piccolo has an additional higher 5th. string, the E string. The violoncello piccolo is in the middle between the cello and the viola de gamba in terms of voice and sound.
The rehearsal of the 6th Cello Suites for Violoncello by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed for a 5-string instrument, represents a fundamental task in the cello piccolo repertoire.
In recent years there have been recordings by well-known baroque cellists with a five-string cello with a normal or slightly smaller scale. The corresponding Bach cantatas were recorded, the 6th Bach cello suite and other music.
