Nevins describes this work as "[t]he ablest descriptive and evaluative study of the leading generals (and their campaigns) in Lee's army; massively documented, movingly written, highly authoritative, and faintly smug" CWB I, 30. Harwell states that it "supplements and complements R. E. Lee. It also stands in its own right as one of the great works of military history" In Tall Cotton 61. Howes F-349. A beautiful edition of Freeman's critically acclaimed inquiry into the Confederacy following and expanding on Freeman's Pulitzer Prize winning biography R. E. Lee. Though without indication, this copy from the library of Civil War scholar and historian, Gary W. Gallagher.
