Of interest to historians of the Manchester textile trade, a pair of small glazed cases containing samples or more correctly 'staples' to show the length of cotton fibres; St Vincent Superfine Sea Island and American Upland.  Both of these varieties were widely planted in the southern states of the USA from the late 18thC chiefly to meet the demand for raw cotton from the Manchester cotton industry.  From similar examples held at the Science Museum it seems likely that these date from around 1910.   Their exact provenance is unknown, they were included in a mixed lot at a general household auction however their Lancashire location suggests a strong link to a Manchester family or company.   Please see photos for details.

Size; 20cm x 10cm.
